Strathcona County RCMP Urge Pet Owners To Leave Pets At Home During Hot Weather
Strathcona County RCMP urge pet owners to leave pets at home during hot weather
Strathcona County, Alta. - With the recent heatwave sweeping through the region, the Strathcona County RCMP is reminding pet owners and caretakers about the dangers of leaving animals in hot vehicles. Despite good intentions, bringing pets along on errands can have harmful, and even life-threatening effects on dogs.
Dogs are unable to release heat by sweating like humans, making them more susceptible to heatstroke in a short amount of time. It is best to leave pets at home where there is more space, water, and shade. Signs of heatstroke in dogs include exaggerated panting, rapid pulse, salivation, weakness, and collapse.
During the recent heatwave, there were 28 reports to police in July 2024 where dogs were left in unoccupied vehicles, with the primary hotspot being the Emerald Hills Shopping Area. Pet owners are urged to take precautions and leave their furry friends at home during hot weather.
If you encounter an animal in distress in a parked vehicle, note the vehicle's details and contact the Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741 or your local police.
